The Cost of DIY AEO: Budgeting a Claude Skills Workflow

A DIY AEO workflow can be a sensible choice when you have the data, engineering capacity, and a genuinely custom requirement. For a marketing team that needs recurring visibility checks and a clear fix queue, CiteCue packages those jobs into a system you can use immediately.

Separate setup costs from monthly costs

A skill file may be inexpensive to obtain. The relevant budget is the complete process you intend to run with it. Separate one-time setup from recurring work so a low subscription cost does not conceal a large implementation project.

Setup includes choosing data sources, connecting accounts, agreeing metric definitions, building the report, and checking that another person can operate it. Recurring costs include usage fees, hosting, failed-run investigation, and adjustments when an upstream response changes.

These components can be built or bought. A skill that already connects to a monitoring product may cover several through that product. Evaluate the actual setup instead of assuming every downloadable skill supplies the same system.

Assign a maintenance owner before approving the budget

Ask who gets the task when a scheduled report is missing, a credential expires, or a saved answer no longer matches the format your script expects. Record a backup owner too. If the answer is “whoever built the skill,” include that person's availability in the decision.

A useful handover check is to have a second team member retrieve last week's source answers and regenerate the report. Record where they need undocumented knowledge. Each missing step is part of the work your team will own.

Calculate a break-even point

Use an evaluation period long enough to reflect the commitment you are considering:

DIY cost over the period = setup cost + number of months × monthly operating cost.

Compare that with the platform subscription, onboarding work, and any additional operating work over the same period. Use quotes or observed usage for variable fees, and show a range for maintenance hours rather than hiding uncertainty in one number.

Here is a fictional budgeting example, not CiteCue pricing or measured customer savings. If DIY infrastructure costs €60 per month and a candidate platform costs €180, the apparent monthly difference is €120. At an internal cost of €40 per hour, three extra hours of DIY maintenance consume that difference. Initial setup and any platform administration still belong in the full comparison.

That calculation does not decide the purchase by itself. A custom integration may justify extra cost. A small team may prefer to pay for a maintained product even when a spreadsheet makes DIY appear cheaper.
