How to Track Your Brand in AI Answers

Jul 2, 2026 · 3 min read · CiteCue Team

Tracking your brand in AI answers starts the same way every CiteCue project does: tell it what to watch, let it ask the AI engines the right questions, and read what comes back. Here's the actual flow, step by step.

Step 1: Create a project

A CiteCue project represents one brand you're tracking. When you create one, you point it at your website. That's the only input CiteCue needs to get started, because it reads your site to build everything else automatically.

Step 2: Let AI Context auto-fill from your site

Once your project is created, CiteCue reads your website and auto-fills your AI Context: a brand description, likely buyer personas, a starting list of competitors, and the key topics your brand should be visible for. This step matters more than it looks. Every prompt CiteCue generates and every scan analysis it runs downstream builds on this context, so it's worth a quick read-through before you move on. Everything here is editable, and the competitor list especially is worth checking, since it drives your head-to-head comparisons later.

Step 3: Build your prompt list

Prompts are the real questions your buyers ask AI assistants: "best CRM for a small team," "is this brand trustworthy," "who should I use for X." CiteCue generates a starter set of prompts from your AI Context, and you take it from there in Prompts Monitoring. You can keep the generated ones that sound like your actual buyers, add your own one at a time or pasted in bulk, import a list from a CSV, or convert existing SEO keywords into prompt form. What you're after is a list that mirrors what people genuinely type into ChatGPT or Gemini when they're deciding whether to consider you, not a list of your own marketing taglines. If you're unsure what belongs on that list, there's a full guide to choosing prompts for AI visibility tracking.

Step 4: Run your first scan

With prompts in place, run a scan. A scan sends every enabled prompt through the AI engines available on your plan, using live web search (the same way a real person asking the question would), and records the complete answer along with every source it cited. Scans run in the background and usually finish in a few minutes, so you can keep working while it runs; a progress indicator keeps you posted.

Step 5: Read the results in Prompts Monitoring

Once the scan finishes, Prompts Monitoring is where you see the results prompt by prompt: whether your brand was mentioned, roughly where you ranked in the answer, and the full text of what the AI actually said rather than a bare summary score. This is deliberately granular, because "68 out of 100" doesn't tell you nearly as much as reading that an AI answer recommended a competitor by name while describing your brand as an afterthought (or not mentioning you at all). Once you're in the weeds, there's a separate guide to reading mention, position, citation, and sentiment results.

Your overall visibility score, shown on the project overview, rolls this up into one 0-100 number: how often you're mentioned carries about half the weight, your share of citations roughly a third, and the rest comes from how often your own pages are cited directly.

Step 6: Track it over time

A single scan is a snapshot; brand monitoring is really about the pattern across scans. The Free plan runs manual scans only; set up a recurring cadence once you upgrade (daily on the Pro and Agency plans) so you can see whether your visibility is improving, holding steady, or slipping as competitors publish new content or your own pages change. If you make a content change based on what you find, the next scan is how you confirm it actually moved the needle, rather than assuming it did.

That loop of track, read, act, re-scan is the entire discipline of brand monitoring in AI answers. There's no ranking page to refresh; the only way to know where you stand is to keep asking the same questions your buyers ask and reading the answers honestly. If you want a quick baseline before committing to any of it, run a free AI visibility audit first.
